This is the ancient city of Matera in Southern Italy. It was founded by the Romans in the 3rd Century BC. Most of these pictures are from an area called the "Sassi." "The Gospel According to St. Matthew," "The Passion of the Christ" and "Christ the Lord" among many other films were shot here. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1993.
